CNEL STATS

CNEL STATS is an online tool for the guided navigation of a vast amount of data and statistical information from , organised on a territorial scale. To date, the areas of reference for the information contained in the database are the provinces, regions, and main Italian geographical areas, in addition to the corresponding areas in the European Union, known as NUTS (Nomenclature of Statistical Territorial Units).

The initial mode of access to the database is by territory, with a distinction between Italy and the European Union. It should be noted that the European section also regards the Italian regions (NUTS 2) and provinces (NUTS 3) and that the indicators refer to a specific database that is derived from the Eurostat source. The database that refers to the European regions can, therefore, be consulted separately, the discriminating factor being the source of reference. (This source is not always harmonized with the usually more up-to-date statistics provided by Italian sources regarding only the national territory.) By starting in this section, the user can direct his or her search for data and indicators toward a given territory of interest and go progressively into greater territorial detail.

In order to better facilitate access to the information that it contains, the database is organised by thematic areas, which are then subdivided into a second level of topics. Access by thematic area also allows the user to proceed by going gradually into more detail, in this case in terms of logical relevance to the phenomena under examination, to arrive at the single aggregate or indicator. In order to provide the latest updates (not necessarily in a territorial dimension) with respect to the aggregates of interest, the most recent press releases issued by the statistical sources are made available.

Both the territorial and thematic approaches (as well as a "cross" between the two modes), allow the user to arrive at a presentation of the data according to the logic of vertical comparison between the territorial levels selected and the relative aggregations to which they belong (e.g. with reference to a province, its region, its macro area, and Italy). This allows for an immediate evaluation of the data relative to the area under observation.

The following features are available for all the information presented: by selecting the "Information" icon Explanatory notes about the phenomenon, the user can consult definitions as well as relevant notes and remarks; by selecting the "Magnifying glass" icon Greater details on this phenomenon, the user can view available levels of detail (in other words, the segmentation of data). The "Graphics" icon Graphic permits the user to draw tables. By selecting the text of the chosen indicator, the user obtains a corresponding table with all the selected territorial aggregations (e.g. all the regions).

It is possible to modify the parameters of selection at any point:

  • temporal (selection of time series)
  • geographical (change of area)
  • thematic (change of thematic area)
  • of visualization (change from absolute values to percentages or ranks)

For those who would like advice and suggestions on the use of data and indicators to analyse local situations and dynamics, we have provided a specific section containing several paths of guided navigation. Lastly, there is an area that presents useful documents containing methodological instructions, classifications and disclaimers, as well as links to sites of specific interest.
