INAUGURATION OF THE 11^ TERM OF THE CNEL AT THE MARCO BIAGI PLENARY HALL THIS MORNING

22 settembre 2023

This morning, the inauguration ceremony of the 11th term of the National Council for Economics and Labour (CNEL) was held at the Marco Biagini Plenary Hall in Viale Lubin (Rome), in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. Also attending were the President of the Italian Constitutional Court, Silvana Sciarra, the President of the Italian Senate, Ignazio La Russa, the President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Lorenzo Fontana, the Italian Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, and the Italian Minister of Labour and Social Policies, Marina Elvira Calderone.

The proceedings were opened by Prof. Renato Brunetta, president of the CNEL, who, after expressing his heartfelt thanks to the authorities present at the Marco Biagini Plenary, focused his entire speech on the theme of Work. "The Work of which our Constitution speaks," said Brunetta, "is Work paid the right amount, dignified and, above all, safe. It was precisely to the problem of safety in the workplace that the CNEL President dedicated ample space: "Working is not dying, as President Mattarella rightly reminded us in recent days. Today, the problem of safety at work is no longer that of good laws, which we have, but of their effective application. And this task falls to everyone, starting with the intermediate bodies. And the CNEL, as the home of the intermediate bodies, is programmatically committed to placing Work as an expression of dignity and safety at the centre of this new term."

The Italian Minister of Labour and Social Policies, Marina Elvira Calderone, then spoke, emphasising the CNEL's strategic role on labour issues. "The CNEL," she said, "is the house of debate between the representations and an opportunity for stimulus on the issue of contractual renewals."

Finally, the Italian Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, analysed the importance of giving the CNEL full legitimacy within the public and political debate. "The CNEL must be restored not only to the architecture of our institutional system, but above all to full legitimacy in the political debate, from which it has been substantially removed in recent years," he concluded.
