The façade of Villa Lubin, headquarters of the CNEL, will be lit up in red from sunset today, 24 November, to midnight tomorrow, 25 November. This is the first of the initiatives planned by the National Council for Economics and Labour on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
This will be followed, on 30 November, by a conference entitled “Gender violence: respect, freedom, independence. The role of social players”. Participants included, in addition to CNEL President Renato Brunetta: the President of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on Femicide Martina Semenzato; the President of the CNEL Committee for Equal Opportunities Rossana Dettori; Linda Laura Sabbadini, former Director of ISTAT and expert in statistics for gender studies; Valerio De Gioia, Councillor of the Court of Appeal of Rome; Costanza Andreini, Public Policy Manager of META. During the event, the StopNCII.it platform aimed at curbing the phenomenon of Revenge Porn will also be presented.
Finally, also on 30 November, on the sidelines of the conference, the CNEL red bench dedicated to women victims of violence will be inaugurated in the garden of Villa Lubin.
STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT BRUNETTA
“On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we decided to lit up in red the façade of the CNEL. A symbolic gesture to help keep attention high on the repeated cases of feminicide that continue to claim victims in our country, most recently the young Giulia Cecchettin.
Violence against women is the result of backward and unfortunately still ingrained pseudo-cultures and prejudices, which we must recognise and fight with determination. But we also need to strengthen social networks, starting with the world of work, eliminating discrimination and economic inequalities, which in fact limit freedom, emancipation and self-determination. The most recent INPS (National Institute for Social Security) data report that the so-called gender pay gap to the disadvantage of women is equal to € 7,922 per year. A deficit of democracy that absolutely must be filled”. So said Renato Brunetta, president of the CNEL.
